About our classes...
Michigan has made a commitment to develop the whole child in an initiative called the Top 10 in 10. Niles Virtual School courses are designed to add the following elements of that Top 10 in 10 plan.
These Niles Virtual School courses provide for parent engagement and support by parents, students and Niles Virtual School staff. All collaborate in creating a learning experience personalized to meet each student's self-determined academic and personal goals. We utilize multiple stakeholders in an effort to provide this child-centered, personalized learning experience. The virtual content in Niles Virtual School elective courses provides the basic instruction and suggested activities needed for the outcomes presented. All students (full time and part time) and parents work together to personalize these courses by choosing the projects and other resources necessary to demonstrate mastery. These courses are ideally created to address high-risk factors by providing student driven elements.
To create this child-centered instructional experience, students must complete a Personalized Learning Plan in conjunction with parents and Niles Virtual School staff.
Students will find this Personalized Learning Plan in their Connections Home class.
How does Canvas work?
You will find each of the virtual classes in which you enroll on your dashboard in Canvas once the school year has begun. Clicking on those virtual classes in Canvas will open up those classes and reveal modules to represent the semester's work. Video tutorials are provided to you prior to the school year to help you through the process.
For more information regarding our virtual classes come on over to the Program Guidelines page under Info.
It is essential we have student choices of additional resources early so as to vet and prepare for enrollment.
About our classes...
Michigan has made a commitment to develop the whole child in an initiative called the Top 10 in 10. Niles Virtual School courses are designed to add the following elements of that Top 10 in 10 plan.
- Provide every child access to an aligned, high-quality P-20 system from early childhood to post-secondary attainment – through a multi-stakeholder collaboration with business and industry, labor, and higher education–to maximize lifetime learning and success.
- Implement, with strong district and building leadership, high-quality instruction in every classroom through a highly coherent, child-centered instructional model where students meet their self-determined academic and personal goals to their highest potential.
- Reduce the impact of high-risk factors, including poverty, and provide equitable resources to meet the needs of all students to ensure that they have access to quality educational opportunities.
- Create a strong alignment and partnership with job providers, community colleges, and higher education to assure a prepared and quality future workforce, and informed and responsible citizens.
